چکیده

We present the results of a multi-epoch radio monitoring campaign measuring the milliarcsecond structure of the jet in the radio-quiet quasar PG1407+263. This is the highest-sensitivity, highestresolution multi-year study of a distant active galaxy. The observations are naturally explained in terms of a beamed relativistic jet, some of whose fluctuations in flux density can be ascribed to interaction with the narrow-line region of the quasar. The optical properties of PG1407+263, in particular the low equivalent widths of the emission lines, may be related to the fact that we are viewing this quasar almost pole-on, giving us a direct view into its broad-line region. Subject headings: galaxies: jets — quasars: individual (PG1407+263) — radio continuum: galaxies

X-rays from the radio-quiet quasar PG 1407+265: relativistic jet or accretion disc emission?

We present two XMM-Newton observations of the luminous (Lx > 10 erg s ), radioquiet quasar, PG 1407+265, separated by eleven months. The data indicate two distinct states: a highly variable, bright state (first epoch); and a quiescent, low-flux one (second epoch). During the low-flux state the spectrum is consistent with a single, unabsorbed power law. However, during the brighter state a highl...

Evidence for a black hole in a radio-quiet quasar nucleus

We present the first milli-arcsecond resolution radio images of a radio-quiet quasar, detecting a high brightness temperature core with data from the VLBA. On maps made with lower-frequency data from MERLIN and the VLA jets appear to emanate from the core in opposite directions, which correspond to radio-emission on arcsecond scales seen with the VLA at higher frequencies. These provide strong ...

The Optically-powerful Quasar E1821+643 Is Associated with a 300-kpc Scale Fr I Radio Structure

We present a deep image of the optically-powerful quasar E 1821+643 at 18 cm made with the Very Large Array (VLA). This image reveals radio emission, over 280h kpc in extent, elongated way beyond the quasar’s host galaxy. Its radio structure has decreasing surface brightness with increasing distance from the bright core, characteristic of FR I sources (Fanaroff & Riley 1974). Its radio luminosi...

Radio-Variability in Radio-Quiet Quasars and Low-Luminosity AGN

We report on two surveys of radio-weak AGN to look for radio variability. We find significant variability with an RMS of 10-20% on a timescale of months in radio-quiet and radio-intermediate quasars. This exceeds the variability of radio cores in radio-loud quasars (excluding blazars), which vary only on a few percent level. The variability in radio-quiet quasars confirms that the radio emissio...

discovery of gamma - ray emission from a relativistic jet in the narrow - line Seyfert 1 quasar

We report the discovery by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope of high-energy gamma-ray emission from the peculiar quasar PMN J0948+0022 (z = 0.585± 0.001). Contrary to the expectations, the optical spectrum of this quasar shows only narrow lines [FWHM(Hβ) ∼ 1500 km/s] and the typical characteristics of narrow-line Seyfert 1 type galaxies. However, the str...
